Chinese VIN Check Digit — Position 9 Verification

The Chinese VIN check digit occupies position 9, and unlike every other character in the number it tells you nothing whatsoever about the car. It exists to prove that the other sixteen characters are internally consistent — a self-test built into the identifier itself.

For anyone buying at a distance it is the most useful character in the string, because it is the one part of a VIN that can be verified with no database and no manufacturer table at all. The arithmetic either works or it does not.

What position 9 is actually for

Positions 1 to 8 describe the vehicle and positions 10 to 17 identify it. Position 9 does neither. It is a checksum, computed from all sixteen remaining characters at the moment the number is assigned.

That makes it a detector of errors rather than of lies. Its original purpose was to catch mistakes made when a human read a number off a plate and typed it into a form — the transposed pair, the dropped character, the 5 read as an S. It happens to also catch most fabricated numbers, because a randomly invented VIN has roughly a one in eleven chance of landing on a valid digit.

Turning letters into numbers before you can add them

The calculation cannot proceed on letters, so each one is transliterated to a value first. A through H take the values 1 to 8. J, K, L, M and N take 1 to 5, with P at 7 and R at 9. S through Z take 2 to 9 in order. I, O and Q carry no value at all, because they never appear in a VIN in the first place.

Numerals keep their own value. The result is a sequence of seventeen numbers, one per position, with position 9 itself set aside because it is the value being solved for.

The mapping is not arbitrary, and it is not a cipher you need to memorise. It runs the alphabet in blocks so that every permitted letter lands on a single digit from 1 to 9, which keeps the eventual sum inside a manageable range and makes the whole calculation reproducible with a pen and paper.

Weights, the sum, and the remainder after dividing by 11

Each position carries a fixed weight. Positions 1 to 8 are weighted 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 10. Position 9 is weighted 0, which is how it removes itself from its own calculation. Positions 10 to 17 are weighted 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2.

Multiply each transliterated value by its weight, add the seventeen products together, and divide the total by 11. The remainder is the check digit. It is deterministic — the same VIN always produces the same answer, on any calculator, in any country.

Why the ninth character is sometimes an X

Dividing by 11 produces remainders from 0 to 10, which is eleven possible outcomes for a single character slot that holds only one digit. Ten of those fit as 0 through 9. The eleventh does not.

The convention is to write a remainder of 10 as the letter X. So an X in position 9 is not an error, not a placeholder and not a sign of a re-registered vehicle. It is simply the eleventh symbol, and it appears on roughly one VIN in eleven.

What a failed calculation does and does not prove

A mismatch means the seventeen characters you are holding are not a coherent VIN. In the overwhelming majority of cases the cause is transcription: a character misread from a dirty plate, or a copy-paste that clipped the string. Re-read the number from the vehicle before drawing any conclusion.

If it still fails after careful re-reading, treat the number as unusable and do not proceed on it. A passing calculation, meanwhile, proves only internal consistency. It does not prove the number was ever issued to a real car, that it matches the vehicle it is stamped on, or that the car behind it is undamaged — those questions belong to registration and insurance records.

Do all Chinese vehicles carry a check digit?

The position exists on every 17-character VIN. Enforcement of a correct value has historically been strictest on vehicles built for markets that mandate it, so treat a failure on an older domestic-market car as a reason to look closer rather than as proof of fraud.

Can I calculate it by hand?

Does a valid digit mean the car is genuine?

No. It means the number is internally consistent. Confirming that a real vehicle with that identity exists, and establishing its accident, mileage and ownership record, requires a lookup against registration data.
