How to Read a Chinese VIN — Step-by-Step
Working out how to read Chinese VIN numbers takes about a minute once you know where the boundaries fall. The string is always seventeen characters, the blocks always sit in the same place, and each block answers a different question about the car in front of you.
What follows is the order to work in. Following this sequence means that if the number is wrong, you find out at step one or step four — not after you have already transferred a deposit.
Step 1 — find the number and count the characters
A Chinese-built vehicle carries its VIN in at least three places: a plate visible through the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, a sticker or stamping in the driver's door jamb, and the registration paperwork. Many manufacturers add a stamping on the chassis or firewall as well.
Read all of them and confirm they match. A disagreement between the windscreen plate and the door jamb is one of the clearest signs of a repaired or altered identity. Then count: seventeen characters, no more and no fewer, with no I, O or Q anywhere in the string.
Step 2 — read the country and the maker
The first character is the country of final assembly, and on a Chinese-built car it is L. Characters two and three complete the manufacturer identifier and name the company — LSJ is SAIC Motor, LGX is BYD, and other domestic makers and joint ventures occupy the rest of the L range.
If the badge and the code appear to disagree, that is not automatically fraud. Several global brands build in China, so an MG or a Shanghai-built Tesla legitimately carries an L. Equally, an MG assembled in Thailand or India will not.
Step 3 — decode positions 4 to 8
The five characters after the manufacturer identifier are the descriptor section. They encode the model line, body style, restraint system and engine or drivetrain, and their meaning is defined by the manufacturer rather than by the standard.
This is the step that needs a reference table for the specific maker. Without one you can still confirm the characters are structurally valid, but you cannot turn them into a trim level. Treat any tool that produces confident specification detail without naming its source with real caution.
One practical shortcut: two cars of the same model and year should share most of these five characters. Where a listing shows two supposedly identical vehicles with descriptor sections that diverge, one of them is a different variant, and it is worth finding out which.
Step 4 — validate the number using position 9
The ninth character is a check digit derived from the other sixteen. Every character is transliterated to a value, multiplied by a positional weight, summed, then divided by 11. The remainder is the check digit, written as X when it comes out at 10.
You do not have to do the arithmetic by hand, but you do need the result. If the calculated digit does not match the printed one, stop and re-read the plate. Either the number was transcribed wrongly, or it was never a real VIN.

Step 5 — read the model year and the plant
Position 10 gives the model year on a rolling thirty-year alphabet: A is 2010, L is 2020 and T is 2026, with I, O, Q, U and Z omitted. Position 11 identifies the assembly plant using a manufacturer-defined code.
Compare the year you decode against the year the seller states and the year on the registration document. Model year is assigned by the manufacturer and often runs ahead of the calendar year of manufacture, so a few months of difference is normal. A two-year gap is not.
Step 6 — check the number against the records
The final six characters are the serial, unique to that car. At this point you know exactly what the vehicle is. You still know nothing at all about what has happened to it.
A VIN is frozen at the factory. Collision repairs, odometer rollbacks, unresolved recalls, insurance write-offs and ownership changes are recorded elsewhere, in databases keyed to the number. Reading the VIN correctly is the prerequisite for that lookup, never a substitute for it.
